04.2009: 0745 UTC:Posn: 12:14N - 045:45E: Gulf of Aden. [wp_geo_map]   A chemical tanker underway spotted a black hull vessel with length about 20m with black sail. Once the vessel was astern, it launched a white hull skiff which proceeded towards the tanker. Pirates in the skiff prepared a ladder to board the tanker. The tanker increased speed and enforced anti piracy preventive measures. Pirates fired RPG which fell on the deck of the tanker but did not explode. 17.04.2009: 0500 UTC: Posn: 12:51N - 047:49E: Gulf of Aden.   A general cargo ship detected a speed boat approaching her at distance of 7nm. Warship contacted and informed of the speed boat and mother vessel nearby. The speed boat doing a speed of 15 knots approached the vessel on the stbd side. When the speed boat was about two nm, three armed pirates were sighted. Vessel fired rocket flares, activated fire hoses, alarm sounded. The speed boat came as close as 40-50 meters from the vessel. The Liberty Sun, a U.S.-flagged cargo ship bound for Mombasa, Kenya, was attacked Tuesday by Somali pirates, 300 miles off the coast of Somalia. The pirates never boarded the ship while crew members barracaded themselves in the engine room after taking RPG and small weapons fire.  The ship is being escorted by the USS Bainbridge.
The source could provide no details on where the vessel was attacked but said it is suspected the pirates were based on a mother ship somewhere in the area.

14.04.2009: 1300 LT: Posn: 03:45S – 048:20E, About 380 nm SE Mogadishu, Somalia.   Two speed boats approached a container ship underway from the stbd bow at a distance of 4 nm. The pirates were armed with automatic weapons and RPG. One speed boat with six pirates attempted to board but vessel took evasive manoeuvres and boat retreated. 11.04.2009: 1240 UTC: Posn: 00:18.2N - 051:44.3E, About 285 nm east of Mogadishu, Somalia.   Eight pirates armed with guns and RPG in two skiffs, launched by a pirate mother vessel, attacked a container ship underway. Vessel took evasive manoeuvres and contacted coalition warship. A coalition warship acknowledged and came to the location. 09.04.2009: 0210 UTC: Posn: 06:44.85S - 039:20.06E: Dar es Salaam anchorage, Tanzania.   While the crew kept a vigilant anti piracy watch onboard a container ship, robbers boarded her and succeeded in throwing one life raft into the sea. The crew raised alarm, mustered and reported to the authorities. Vessel did not attempt to recover the life raft due to the large number of robbers. Read More
